Editorial Principles and Searching Tips

Editorial Principles

The text of the documents used in this edition has been transcribed verbatim from the original sources. No punctuation has been added and misspellings have not been corrected except for obvious typographical errors. Salutations, closings of letters, addresses, endorsements, and docketings are deleted. Sometimes excerpts have been printed, marked off by ellipses (. . . ). Editorial insertions are contained within square brackets [ ]; conjectural readings will have a question mark within square brackets. Editorial notes other than footnotes are set in italic type.

Navigating and Searching

In addition to the searching information common to all projects, this mini-edition allows you to search using query forms defined for this edition. These forms allow you to search by person's name, by subject or phrase, to search for words within a defined distance from one another, to search for documents to or by someone or about a person or subject, to search only for speeches by someone or about a topic, or to search for speeches by a particular person about a specific topic. You can also search the edition for names of places, datelines, and organizations.
