The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency
In 1985 Illinois Governor James R. Thompson announced state support for a long-term project to collect, edit, and publish "The Lincoln Legals" (a widely employed shorthand for the project). An appropriation in fiscal year 1986 provided startup funds to the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (IHPA). In addition, IHPA provided space, institutional support, and other forms of indirect assistance. Of special importance are the research and reference holdings of IHPA, housed in the Illinois State Historical Library next to project offices. The Historical Library contains the world's largest collection of pre-presidential Lincoln material (printed and manuscript), as well as unmatched reference, periodical, and newspaper files. Its Lincoln Collection houses over 4,000 originals and photocopies of Lincoln legal documents.
The Abraham Lincoln Association
One of the purposes of the Abraham Lincoln Association is ". . .to actively encourage, promote and aid the collection and dissemination of authentic information regarding all phases of his life and career." A material co-sponsor of The Lincoln Legal Papers since its inception, the ALA is a major force behind the project.
Center for Legal Studies, University of Illinois at Springfield
University of Illinois at Springfield's Center for Legal Studies became a co-sponsor in 1988, beginning with an agreement to assign Professor Cullom Davis as project director. It has played a key role in recruiting professional staff and contracting their services to the project. It has also provided technical assistance of various kinds. It also generously assigns one of its graduate assistants each year to the project.
